Residuals (actually spelled Re$iduals) who dubs itself as "the best low key industry bar in Los Angeles" has always been a great conversation and meeting place bar on weekday evenings. New, seductively comfortable leather couches, more tables, a wide selection of ice cold beer, really great beverage prices and free wireless Internet all play in to Residuals being a very special Industry hangout.

Residuals now offers free high speed DSL wireless access to the Internet. Just bring in your laptop computer, Wi-Fi compatible card, and look for the wireless network named Residuals.

Panera Bread

Panera Bread is a comfortable meeting place and the food isn't bad either. They have a large outdoor patio, segregated into smoking and non-smoking sections. Wifi is absolutely free. Plenty of seating.

Food is a bakery/deli style cuisine made fresh to order. Soups, salads, sandwiches, coffee, sodas and of course baked goodies of all kinds. You can eat fairly healthy here. But even if you come just for a drink and internet access, you're totally welcome to hang out as long as you'd like as many do.

Studio City Wi-fi Hotspots

To access a wifi network you will need a laptop or PDA with a wireless card installed. With free hotspots you just open your web browser and surf to any page. When you do that, the wireless network will usually display the network's start page which asks you to accept their terms and conditions before proceeding. With paid networks they will also ask you to log in and provide payment info if you don't already have an account.

When using a public network, security can vary. It is normally wise to assume that your data can be intercepted by others on the same network. For that reason you should avoid entering passwords unless you are visiting a site that uses SSL encryption. Checking your email using your email program will usually send passwords in the clear, so beware. Services like Gmail and Hotmail can be more secure if they use SSL encryption.

Find a Date

One great aspect of using public network in a coffee shop, nightclub or restaurant is the opportunity to meet like minded people. You may find the next love of your life, and at worst enjoy a few drinks and maybe hear some live music. In Los Angeles, there are a growing number of wifi hotspots in bars and cafes. Finding the free ones are even better. It's always great to enjoy food and drinks with friends while getting some work done. Many hotspots are used for meetings and collaborations, whether it be screen writers working on their next movie, internet gurus, or catching up on email.
